Abstract
830,883. Siphons. WOLPIANSKI, B., WECHSLER, S., and HAVKIN, H. July 4, 1958 [July 22, 1957]. No. 21512/58. Class 69 (1). A siphonic device comprises a tube bent into U-shape with its two legs of unequal length, the shorter leg 1 being made rigid by a stiff wire 4 and the longer leg 3 being flexible, the bow 2 being either rigid or flexible, an additional flexible tube 9 extending parallel to the longer leg, being in communication with the latter at 10 near their lower ends, the additional tube being otherwise closed and extending with its upper end substantially up the bow of the U, said upper end communicating with a elastic bulb 11 or the like, a closable vent 6 being provided at the bow of the U. A rigid disc 5 is slidable on the leg 1 with sufficient friction that it can be fixed at any desired height so that liquid may be withdrawn from a vessel down to any predetermined level. The longer leg 3 of the siphon may be closed by a stopper 12 (Fig. 1). Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 2, a stopper 22 is provided on a sleeve 23 having two longitudinal cut-outs 24 through which the stopper 22 is visible. A knurled ring 25 reinforces the upper edge of the sleeve 23. A boss 28 on the leg 3 co-operates with a bayonet-catch 27 formed at the end of a longitudinal slot 26 in the sleeve 23. To open the lower end of the pipe 3 the sleeve 23 is slightly turned and slid downwardly by gripping and moving the knurled ring 25. The sleeve 23 is prevented from falling off by boss 28 abutting against ring 25.
