Abstract

830,845. Grinding. KAYE TOOLS Ltd. Oct. 20, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 33334/57. Class 60. A friction-roller arrangement for rotating a workpiece 40 in a grinding machine comprises a pressure-roller 92 rotated by engagement with a driving-roller 60, the pressure-roller being so mounted that it can occupy a position with its axis of rotation inclined relatively to the axis of the driving-roller whilst maintaining driving contact therewith. The arrangement is applicable to the cylindrical grinding of a pair of identical rollers 40, 42, freely rotatable on a shaft 44, e.g. textile drafting-rollers, which are mounted on self-aligning bearings fitted within the rollers. The driving roller 60 is carried in " straight " bearings 66, 68, Fig. 4, mounted in identical arms 78, 80 which are connected at their outer ends by rods 90, 100 having their ends carried by part-spherical bearings 86, 88, 102, 104, to allow of slight relative movement of the arms 78, 80 in opposite directions about the axis of the driving-roller 60. The pressurerollers 92, 94 which may be provided with rubber friction surface 98, are secured to the rod or shaft 90 by grub-screws 96 and are maintained in contact with the workpiece 40 by a pair of tension springs 136, 138 attached to the rod 100 and anchored to upwardly extending parts 110 of the base 10. The pressure-rollers may be moved out of engagement with the workpiece 40 by means of a rod 122 attached at right angles to the cross-member 100, the opposite end of the rod 122 being pivotally attached to a forked member 114 which may be swung by a handle 118 about an axis pin 116 carried in the upright portions 110 ; lifting the handle 118 moves the lower ends of the arms 78, 80 downwards. The workpiece is held against the faces 36, 38, of a support block 26 by a spring-loaded clamp 54 having a handle 56 to facilitate removal or replacement of the workpiece. The base 10 is dove-tail-grooved to provide an attachment to the machine bed 18.
