Abstract

830,816. Discharge apparatus. DE SAN, M. G. L. M. J. Dec. 17, 1957 [Dec. 17, 1956], No. 39181/57. Class 39(1). [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXV] An aircraft or floating or submerged vessel is propelled by the interaction of a magnetic field and a stream of ionised air or other conducting fluid. The vehicle body 8 (shown in side view) is circular in plan view and has a circular conductor (not shown) within its outer edge. This conductor produces the flux 1 and is maintained in a supra-conductive condition by cooling by the evaporation of liquid helium. If the medium around the vehicle is not already conductive, the region in the direction of its motion 7 is ionised by a stream of ions 5 from emitters 6, which may be an electron source, e.g. a negatively-charged heated surface, a source of ultra-violet radiation, or radioactivity. An electric current passes laterally above and below the aircraft between electrodes 4 at its side edges. The ions produced at 6 ionise the forward air and so permit the passage of current laterally between the electrodes 4, this current interacting with the field 1 to produce motive force. The current between the electrodes can be produced by known means or radio-active bodies. The vehicle may be steered by controlling the ratio of current above and below the aircraft and by distorting the current flow by means of asymetrical fields.
