Abstract
830,663. Sight-testing apparatus. STOCKY, J. Nov. 19, 1956 [Nov. 17, 1955], No. 35238/56. Class 97(1) Apparatus for investigating the occurrence of secondary images comprises a light tight compartment containing a number of observation screens, an eyepiece concentrating the visual axis of the investigated person on to one of the screens and revolvable relative to the compartment, means for projecting on one of the screens light images of predetermined colour and intensity and means for recording the duration of the projected image, of the latent interval thereafter and of the time of subsequent appearance and training of the secondary image. As shown the apparatus comprises a closed container 1 having an eyepiece 12 through which screens 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 7<SP>11</SP>, diffusely illuminated by lamps 3, may be obscured. The one screen can be additionally illuminated by a lamp 8 in a light-tight box 2 which can be attached at will behind any of the screens 7, 7<SP>1</SP> and 7<SP>11</SP> and which is intermittently energized by one of a number of cams 16 which close switches in the lamp circuit for different periods. On the shaft 23 carrying the cams is a drum 20 on which a record can be made by a pen 22 controlled by a switch 24 operated by the patient. In use the patient applies his eye or eyes to the eyepiece 24 and looks directly_at the screen 7. Behind one of the screens 7, 7<SP>1</SP> or 7<SP>11</SP> is the illuminating box 2 and the interior of the container 1 is diffusely illuminated by the lamps 3. The shaft 23 is then rotated by a suitable motor and when one of the cams 16 closes the circuit thereto the lamp 8 is energized. Thereupon the patient presses the switch 24 and the pen 22 begins to record. When the cam 16 breaks the lamp circuit the patient releases the switch 24 but presses it again when the after-image appears. Maintaining the recording while the after image is visible. Colour filters may be inserted before the lamp 8. Alternatively the intermittent illumination may be provided by a light projector adjacent the eyepiece, the lighting directed to the appropriate screen by a rotatable mirror.
