Abstract

829,892. Dental handpieces. TANNER, P. H., and NAGEL, O. P. Dec. 19, 1957, No. 39503/57. Class 81 (2). A dental handpiece comprises a handle at the working end of which is a casing insertable in the patient's mouth and a fluid driven means in the casing to receive, hold and rotate a dental tool. A brass or copper rotor 16 is housed in a stainless steel casing 15 forming the head of the handpiece. The rota has buckets in the form of semi-circular indentations or may have conventional vanes. The rotor has a reduced portion 22, for receiving the shaft of a dental burr, and a burr holder 19 by which it is mounted in bearings 17, 18. Neoprene or rubber rings 20 in the rotor secure the butt. The casing is detachably secured to a handle 14 which houses a compressed air supply pipe 35, a discharge tube 31 directing the air through the casing and against the rotor. Expansion of the compressed air in the vicinity of the rotor cools the dental burr. After use, the air supplied passes through slots 29, 34 in the casing and the handle respectively, to the rear of the handpiece and escapes to atmosphere through muffler material 54 and holes 52 in a muffler holder 45. The compressed air is supplied through a flexible hose to the rear of the handpiece which has a hoseguard 46 and an adaptor 43 which is connected with the supply pipe 35.
