Abstract
829,732. Dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 5, 1958 [June 6, 1957; June 24, 1957], No. 17987/58. Class 35. A dynamo-electric machine, e.g. a small D.C. motor, has a sheet-metal frame with one or more overlapping or abutting joins secured together and to a polepiece by at least one projection integral with the polepiece. Fig. 4 shows a motor having a single solid polepiece 21 with a circular lug 23 which rivets together the overlapping edges of the single sheet frame 10. The frame is further secured by indents in one overlapping edge which locate in apertures in the other. An additional plate 19 is welded opposite the single pole to improve flux distribution. Alternatively, the pole may be laminated, in which case axial slots are provided in the frame to accommodate a projection on each lamination which is riveted over, or there may be two such poles, the second one securing the plate 19. In another arrangement the frame may be buttjointed, either on one side only, secuted by one laminated pole, or on two sides, held by two poles, as shown in Fig. 14. In this case each pole has two riveting projections 191 and 192. Rectangular brush holders, each having a slot for the emergence of the brush pigtail, are attached to a plate which, in the single-pole machine, is secured by twisted tangs to a bracket 29 clamped on polepiece 21 by the field coil 26 and to a projection on plate 19 by a known metal fastener. In two-pole machines the bracket 29 is duplicated. The ends of the frame have locating notches in which projections on end-plates are registered; one end-plate is welded to the frame, the other, that at the commutator end, is secured by L-shaped studs and nuts. Each end-plate may support a selfaligning bearing bush, or one may have a plain bearing and a housing for a worm drive. Methods of resisting axial thrust, of the " ball and block " type are described, including one with an adjustable block, Fig. 2 (not shown).
