Abstract

829,708. Printers' composing appliances. HAWTHORN BAKER Ltd. June 16, 1958 [March 20, 1957], No. 9161/57. Class 100(3) Quoins. A quoin comprises side plates 3, 4 having cam surfaces 7, 8; 9, 10 cooperating with upper and lower wedges 11, 12. A screw 13 engages a threaded aperture in the wedge 12 and passes through a plain or oppositely threaded aperture in the wedge 11 with the screw head and a washer 17 resting on a shoulder 16 of the wedge. The screw head has a rectangular aperture for engagement by a key. Alternatively, the screw head may be conical and constitute the upper wedge. The wedges move towards or away from each other as the key is turned. Guide pins for the side plates may be provided with springsto urge the plates together. Scales. A spacing indicator comprises a graduated scale fixed to one side plate and extending over the other side plate.
