829,336. Vacuum furnaces. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 29, 1958 [Oct. 7, 1957], No. 30983/58. Class 51 (2). [Also in Group II] A vacuum furnace for the distillation of a volatile constituent from a metal band comprises a cylindrical chamber 1 in which are arranged peripheral heating resistances 3 in refractory material 4 and protected by plates 5 of insulating material such as mica, a rotary cylindrical container formed of vertical rods 9 which acts as a support for the metal band 10, a perforated cylindrical screen 11 and a condenser formed by vanes 12 mounted on shaft 8 through which cooling water is passed. The shaft 8 is mounted for rotation in sealing glands 13 and 14. Vacuum is applied to the chamber via duct 2. The apparatus may be used in the production of porous membranes, e.g. by evaporation of zinc from brass or German silver.
