Abstract

829,224. Combination toots ; pivoted handles. DELPIERRE, J. P. June 6, 1957 [Dec. 28, 1956], No. 18002/57. Class 61. A combination tool provides an axe, spade, adze, hammer, nail extractor, pick and wire cutter. The tool comprises a blade 16 rotatably and pivotally mounted on the end of the shank 24 of a handle 20, means for retaining the blade in a number of depending positions to provide an axe, adze or spade and means for retaining the blade in stored position extending longitudinally through the shank. The tool also includes a tool member 18 pivoted on a transverse axis on the end of the shank 24 and spring ball and detent means 96 for retaining the tool member in a number of positions for use as a hammer, nail extractor or pick. The upper surface 76 of the tool 18 provides a hammer head; a pair of diverging blades 78, 80 extending from the hammer head provide a pick and a nail extractor. Downwardly opening notches 94 extending across the blades 78, 80 co-operate with a notch 70 on the shank to provide a wire-cutter. The shank 24 comprises shell members 26, 28 having threaded ends 38, 40 received within the internally threaded end of the handle 20. The opposite ends of the shells are hemispherical and combine to form a spherical socket in which socket is received a ball member 98 at the end of the shaft of the blade 16. The shells are notched to provide longitudinal co-planar slots 46, 56 extending through the shank. The ball 98 has a series of peripheral notches 106, 108, 110 which are selectively engaged by the ends of a pair of tongues 136, 138 whereby the blade is held in adjusted position. The outer edges of the tongues are slidably and pivotally received within the slots 46, 56 in the shank and may be laterally extended through the slots into longitudinal alignment to provide a protector for the edge of the blade 16 when in the stored position. The blade 16 is maintained in either operative or stored position by a retainer assembly 14 slidable on the shank and engaging the pivoted tongues, the assembly 14 being operated by a lever 170.
