Abstract

829,179. Pipe joints. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. Jan. 1, 1958 [Jan 9, 1957; March 8, 1957], No. 91/58. Class 99(1). Plastic conduits 15, 16, Fig. 1, are welded together by applying around the conduit ends a heat conducting sleeve 10 covered with a layer 12 of combustible material which is ignited to heat the sleeve 10 and fuse the conduit ends together. A layer of plastic 14, which may be a sleeve or a layer of plastic tape, may be applied over the conduit ends and fused therewith ; in a modification, Fig. 6, the intermediate layer 14 is applied as two sleeves with an intermediate layer 23 of reinforcing material such as metal gauze, fibre glass cloth, high density polyethylene fabric, polyethylene coated aluminium foil, or fabric of natural or synthetic fibres. The reinforcing material may alternatively be applied as a narrow strip secured to a wider strip of plastic material. The sleeve 10 may be a copper sleeve of 0À075 to 1À25 mm. thickness or, in cases where the sleeve is to be removed after joining of the tubes, of their metal foil. In Fig. 2, the sleeve 10 is provided with an internal abutment 18 for location of the ends of the tubes and in a modification the ends of the sleeve are flanged to grip the conduits.
