Abstract

Polymer films are made by forming a film of a castable polymer upon a silicone-coated ceramic or metal plane casting surface and then removing the film therefrom. The casting surface may be a metal or alloy foil, e.g. an aluminium foil, coated with a silicone varnish, resin or rubber, e.g. a dimethyl siloxane resin or phenyl methyl siloxane resin, which is preferably cured before the polymer film is formed thereon. The polymeric film-forming material may be applied as a melt or cast from an aqueous dispersion, optionally containing a wetting agent of the alkyl aryl alcohol type, and sintered into a film on the coated surface. Specified polymeric film-forming materials are polyhaloethylenes, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, polytrifluorochloroethylene and polytetrachloroethylene.
