Abstract
Jet fuels are improved by the addition of fuel-soluble esters of boron acids, either by dissolving the ester in the fuel, or by adding the ester to the fuel to precipitate impurities, the precipitate being filtered off to leave fuel containing a residual amount of the ester which may be allowed to remain, or may be removed by washing with water to obtain an improved fuel, to which further ester may be added, if desired. In examples, fuel compositions are obtained by dissolving diphenyl phenylboronate, dodecyl tetraborate, methyl dibenzylborinate and di-(catechol) pyroborate in jet fuels, and by adding methyl metaborate, n-propyl orthoborate, n-butyl metaborate, phenyl metaborate, hexyl metaborate and tetramethylphenyl metaborate to jet fuels, and filtering off the precipitates which are formed to obtain fuels containing residual amounts of the esters; after removing the precipitate formed by the tetramethylphenyl metaborate, the remaining ester is removed by washing with water, and the 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol ester of n-octyl boronic acid is added to the fuel. Other esters mentioned are methyl orthoborate, butyl orthoborate, isobutyl orthoborate, decyl orthoborate, ethyl metaborate, isopropyl metaborate, cetyl metaborate, tetraphenyl tetraborate, tetrapropyl pyroborate, methyl dimethylborinate, octyl di-sec.-butylborinate, methylethyl methylboronate, didecyl butylboronate, cyclohexyl orthoborate, cyclohexyl thiometaborate, dicyclohexyl cyclohexylborinate, cyclohexyl tetraborate, tetracyclopentyl pyroborate, triphenyl orthoborate, benzyl metaborate, tetratolyl pyroborate, phenyl dibenzylborinate, di-(phenyl)-phenylboronate, diphenylmethyl orthoborate, tolyltributyl pyroborate and dimethyl phenylboronate.
