Abstract
Isobutylene polymers or copolymers, with for example, butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene, chlorbutadiene, styrene, a -methyl styrene a -chlorostyrene, acrylonitrile and divinyl benzene, are prepared by polymerization in an indifferent organic solvent at below 0 DEG C. with a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, a co-catalyst and chain-breaking compounds in the presence of (a) phenol sulphide or (b) phenol sulphides and phenols as polymerization accelerators. The process may be continuous, in solution in a saturated or halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. methyl chloride, or liquid ethylene. The cocatalysts are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic alcohols or ethers, and the chain-breaking compounds are olefines such as n-butylenes, di- or tri-isobutylene, di-olefines such as butadiene, isoprene, styrene hydrogen halides, mercaptans and alkyl halides. Suitable phenols are phenol, cresols or di (t-butyl) p-cresol with sulphides such as di(t-butyl phenol), di-(t-amyl phenol), and di(octyl-phenol) sulphides. Polymers of low molecular weight from 5000 may be prepared and the copolymers of isobutylene and styrene are thermoplastic and may be used as self-supporting foils or as coatings for paper, cardboard, fabrics and leather.
