Abstract

828,349. Adjusting vehicle body height; pneumatic shock absorbers. BOURCIER DE CARBON, C. M. L. L. Feb. 14, 1957 [Feb. 15, 1956; March 28, 1956; April 25, 1956], No. 5095/57. Classes 108(2) and 108(3) A piston 17 works in a cylinder 10 in liquid which is separated from gas 12 by a floating piston 13. The piston 17 controls flow through passages 22, 29, connected respectively to a low pressure reservoir 33 and a high pressure liquid reservoir 30. The reservoirs are connected by a motor driven pump 31. In operation, as applied to a vehicle suspension, when the vehicle height decreases beyond a certain point the passage 29 becomes uncovered by the piston 17 and permits pressure liquid to pass into the cylinder until the normal riding height of the vehicle is restored. When the vehicle height increases beyond a predetermined point, the passage 22 is uncovered by the upper surface of the piston and liquid is able to escape to the reservoir 33. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the passages 22, 29, are replaced by conduits 110, 111, which open directly into the wall of the cylinder 96 and are adapted to be covered and uncovered by the wall of the piston 106. The floating piston 13 is replaced by a flexible container 94 which is disposed in a separate chamber 93 connected by a conduit to a pneumatic suspension spring 90. The flexible container may be replaced by a floating piston slidable within the chamber 93 (Fig. 4, not shown). The flexible chamber 94 may alternatively be disposed inside the suspension spring 90, the chamber 93 then being dispensed with (Fig. 5, not shown). In the construction shown in Fig. 3, which is a modification of the construction of Fig. 1, the conduit 22 leading to the low pressure reservoir is not adapted to be covered and uncovered by the piston but is permanently open to a chamber disposed between the piston rod packing 48b and a member 49 surrounding the piston rod with a predetermined clearance 51. The passage 29 leading to the high pressure reservoir is adapted to be cut off by the piston 48 as in the previous construction.
