Abstract
828,025. Diffusion pumps. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO. Ltd. Aug. 11, 1958 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 26878/57. Class 71. A diffusion pump comprises a cylindrical casing 1 in which a central tube 5 extends upwardly from the bottom 4 and is closed at the top by a cap 6, preferably formed with a helical groove, to which is secured a metal coil tube 8 opening on to the top of the cap 6. The tube 8 extends through the bottom 4 to the outlet of a gear pump 11. An electrical heating unit 15 is fixed inside the top of the tube 5. A cylindrical shield 10 surrounds the central tube 5 and a cowl 9 secured to the cap 6 directs vapour to the space between the shield and the casing 1. Working oil in the bottom of the casing is pumped by the gear pump 11 to the tube 8 and is discharged on the top of the cup 6 where it vaporises due to the heating element 5. The casing is cooled by any suitable means such as a coil 3. A vacuum relay may be provided to stop the flow of oil and to switch off the heater in the event of an air leak and a small hole may be provided in the sump end of the feed pipe 8 to by-pass part of the oil back to the sump.
