Abstract

1,038,390. Electric thermal storage space heaters. BRUSH ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Dec. 16, 1964 [Dec. 24, 1963], No. 51028/63. Heading F4U. An electric thermal storage heater comprises an unlagged tank 10 filled with a suitable liquid, e.g. water or sodium acetate trihydrate, a mounting 12 for an electric heating element 13, a current controller 14 having a temperaturesensitive element 15, a detachable cover 16 for an opening in which is disposed a compensating member, and a cut-off switch 17. The compensating member comprises a rubber bag 21 disposed within a tube 22 and held over the outer end of the latter by a hose clip 23, the cover 16 being itself held over the tube by a bracket 25 and opposite this a spring 26 on a post 28. The cover 16 also seats on a further post 31 and is engaged by the loop 33 of an arm 18 of the switch 17. If the bag 21 is collapsed by pressure, the cover will lift against the spring 26 operating switch 17 to cut off the current to element 13. A removable filler cap 11 has a weighted non-return valve, Fig. 3 (not shown) which is allowed to open once under normal operating conditions and is thereupon sealed. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the controls and other components of the heater are mounted on an end wall thereof. Another modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), has the filler cap incorporating a spring-pressed valve instead of the weighted valve of Fig. 3. The valve is contained within a chamber the inner face of which incorporates the valve seating surrounding the exit end of a breather pipe extending to a space at the top of the tank where gas or vapour will collect.
