Abstract
828,015. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 21, 1958 [May 21, 1957], No. 16120/57. Class 39(1). A low pressure mercury vapour-rare gas fluorescent discharge lamp has the mercury from which the mercury vapour filling is derived entirely in the form of an amalgam with another metal or alloy, no free liquid mercury being present within the discharge envelope. The amalgam can consist of 4 parts of cadmium and 20 parts of mercury by weight or of mercury and silver, copper, gold, tin, aluminium, lead or zinc. The amalgam can be in the form of a solid body mounted in a fixed position within the envelope, e.g. a disc or plate mounted behind an electrode, or in the form of a coating on a base member mounted in a fixed position, or in pellet, foil or powder form. In manufacturing the lamp the mercury can be introduced into the envelope in the form of an amalgam, e.g. as a pellet, or can be introduced into the envelope in liquid form, the amalgamating metal or alloy being introduced into the envelope separately to form an amalgam. The rare gas filling can consist of argon, neon and argon, or neon alone at a pressure of 2 mms.
