A reel stand comprises a lifting frame 3, having bearings 4 for the reel axle 2, which is pivotally secured to a base frame and is actuated by hydraulic means 8, 9 acting along a substantially vertical path between the base. frame and a point on.the lifting frame close to the bearings. The lifting frame has a pair of arms 3 secured to a shaft 5 which is carried by bearings 6 on the base frame. The hydraulic means 8, 9 may have an electrically or manual driven pump.
