In popping corn, a blower 16 blows a gas such as air through a heating chamber 17 and a pipe 19 into the lower part of the narrow portion 9 of a tubular popping device. Corn is fed from a hopper 20 by a worm conveyer 22 into the upper part of the portion 9 and carried by an ascending current of heated gas into a wider portion 10 of the popping device. The popping device may comprise a still wider upper portion 12, as shown, or an upper portion having a diameter smaller than that of the portion 10 but larger than that of the portion 9. The current of gas carries popped corn 23 out of the popping device into a housing 6, wherein it is deflected downwards and guided by a wall 25 and, if desired, a wall 26, preferably funnel-shaped, into a receptacle 24. Corn which fails to pop collects in the portion 10 and, when the velocity of the gas is reduced, falls into a trap 14, which may be detachable and/or fitted with a door 15. The housing 6 is, preferably, surrounded by a housing 7 providing a heat-insulating space 8, which may be filled with a gas such as air or evacuated. Preferably, both housings 6 and 7 are made of transparent glass or plastic material and have domed tops, as shown. When the wall 26 is provided, heated air is returned to the blower by connecting its suction intake 28 to the passage between the walls 25 and 26. When no wall 26 is provided, a circular portion of the wall 25 may take the form of a circular screen, which is connected to the suction intake of the blower. The cross-section of the popping device is, preferably, circular, but it may be elliptical, rectangular or square.
