Abstract
Textile fabrics composed of native cellulosic fibres are treated with a textile lubricating agent containing an amide group and with a resin-forming intermediate condensate of urea and formaldehyde wherein the molecular ratio of formaldehyde to urea is at least 1.8 to 1 when there is added as condensing agent, in an amount of 8.8% by weight of urea present, an aqueous ammonia solution of specific gravity 0.88; or at least the equivalent molecular ratio when a larger or smaller quantity of ammonia or no condensing agent at all, or a condensing agent other than ammonia is used, and the fabric is heated to form the resin. The fabric may be treated previously with a swelling agent according to the methods of Specifications 727,889 and 727,890. The lubricant may be methylol stearamide, a methylol derivative of a product from a higher fatty acid chloride and a polyethylene polyamine, stearamido methyl pyridinium chloride or dimethylol stearyl melamine, and may be applied with and/or before and/or after the resin treatment. The resin composition may contain tartaric acid, ammonium dihydrogen phosphate or a mixture of sodium dihydrogen phosphate and magnesium sulphate as a catalyst. The resin-treated fabric may be heated in an atmosphere of superheated steam. Before or during heating, the fabric may be embossed, calendered or glazed or before heating it may be passed through a controlled compressive shrinkage machine. The treated fabrics may be steamed in a decatizing machine. The fabrics treated may be of cotton or of native cellulose mixed with cellulose acetate, nylon or wool. In Example 1, 2 mols. of formaldehyde are condensed with 1 mol. of urea in the presence of aqueous ammonia. To the reaction product is added ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, monomethylol stearamide (as an emulsion) and water and the composition is used for treating cotton poplin. After drying and heating, the fabric is scoured, rinsed and dried. In Example 2, after being similarly treated, cotton dress fabric is treated with a mixture of stearic acid and borax and dried. In the Provisional Specifications, the treatment of fabrics composed of regenerated cellulose or mixtures containing regenerated cellulose is described, and reference is made to lubricants containing paraffin wax and fatty alcoholethylene oxide condensation products. Specification 827,645 also is referred to.
