Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0827357/IV (b)/1> where R and R1 are aryl or haloaryl radicals of the benzene series, at least one being haloaryl. "Halo" includes fluoro, chloro, bromo, and iodo. The aryl radicals may carry substituents such as C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, nitro, phenyl, C2-5 carbalkoxy, C3-8 carbalkoxyalkoxy or methylene dioxy. The compounds may be prepared by reacting a Schiff's base R-CH= N-R11, where R11 is C3-6 alkyl, with a nitromethane R1CH2NO2, e.g. at 20-40 DEG C. in a substantially anhydrous lower alkanoic acid. The Schiff's bases may be prepared by condensing an aldehyde RCHO with an amine R11NH2. The nitromethane reactants may be prepared by reacting R1CH2Br with NaNO2 in a solvent at - 20 DEG to - 15 DEG C. for several hours. Examples are given.ALSO:Compounds suitable for the control of bacteria and fungi have the formula <FORM:0827357/VI/1> where R and R1 are aryl or haloaryl radicals of the benzene series, at least one being haloaryl. "Halo" includes fluoro, chloro, bromo and iodo. The aryl radicals may carry substituents such as C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, nitro, phenyl, C2-5 carbalkoxy, C3-8 carbalkoxyalkoxy, or methylene dioxy. The compounds may be used in aqueous dispersions, or in germicidal soap compositions.
