Abstract
827,246. Packaging ; closuring containers. STERNAU, M. M., and HOFMANN, P. R. June 7, 1957 [June 15, 1956 ; March 14, 1957 ; April 16, 1957], No. 18169/57. Classes 94(1), 125(2) and 125(3). In a method of closuring a container or receptacle a plastic heat-shrinkable member is placed on the mouth of the container with a rim area extending around a rim of the container and the rim area is heated to shrink the plastic member onto the container rim. The container 9 may have a beaded rim and the cover member have an inner film 5 of plastic and an outer layer 1 of mouldable material such as aluminium, paper or plastic or the cover 8 may be dished, Fig. 6. The cover may be applied as a sheet, Fig. 7, and crimped on before heat is applied. In another modification, Fig. 9, a one part closure 5 is applied having secured thereto an opening string 13 and in a further modification cement, wax or other bonding medium is applied at various spots. The closures are applied by a capping tool 21, Fig. 11, having a suction line 22 to enable the cover to be picked up and passages 23a through which heat can be applied to the closure rim area by hot air, hot water, steam, electricity or open flame. An alternative tool 23, Fig. 12, has passages 25 and suction lines 24, the tool 21, 23 being of asbestos, hand rubber or the like either entirely or only in the neighbourhood of the heat passageways. In a modified method, Fig. 15, a roll 36 of outer material 35 and a roll 34 of transparent shrinkable film 33 are positioned over a container 32 and shears 37 cut both layers of the material in cooperation with a heat sealing and crimping device as for example as shown in Fig. 11.
