Sewage flowing from left to right, Fig. 1, into a stormwater channel 1 provided in a chamber 2, Fig. 3, passes into a sewer outflow 3. When stormwater conditions occur and the liquid level in the chamber 2 rises to the tines 16 on a rotatable shaft 13, an electric motor 17, Fig. 1, is started, preferably automatically but otherwise manually, so that the shaft is rotated and the tines sweep two opposed arcuate screens formed by ribs 10, Fig. 1, between pairs of end members 4, 4a, Fig. 3. Paper, detritus and the like are thus removed from the screens, enabling the stormwater to flow outwards, Fig. 3, through the screens unhindered, and obviating fouling of adjacent land and streams. Solids thus removed are swept from the tines by fixed brushes 18 and fall back into the chamber 2 to be carried away by the normal sewage flow. The end members 4, on the left of Fig. 3, are joined by a plate 12 above the ribs 10, while the corresponding area on the right is left open to permit liquid to flow over the screen on clogging. In a modification one screen only is provided, the other side of the apparatus being closed by a plate.
