Abstract
Polysters or polysteramides with terminal hydroxyl, carboxyl and/or amine groups and preferably of molecular weight 500-5,000 have their reaction rates with polyisocyanates reduced by treating them prior to such reaction with an inorganic adsorbent. The polyester being treated may be in molten or solution form and treatment may be effected (a) by stirring the polyester with the adsorbent and then filtering (b) by passing the polyester through a fixed bed of the adsorbent; or (c) by a continuous method using a fluidized bed technique. Specified adsorbents are silica gel, silicic acid, activated alumina, activated charcoal or carbon, activated bleaching earths, dixie clay, bentonite, fuller's earth, finelydivided slate, talc or feldspar, a mixture of clay and diatomaceous earth, magnesium oxide and calcium carbonate. The polyesters are those prepared by reacting a polycarboxylic acid (preferably a dicarboxylic acid) with a polyhydroxy compound (preferably a glycol or a mixture thereof with a minor amount of a polyhydric alcohol). The polyesteramides are those prepared by reacting a glycol, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and an amino-alcohol or a diamine. Many polyester and polyesteramideforming reactants are specified. Examples describe treating of polyethylene adipate with an adsorbent and afterwards reacting it with p-phenylene diisocyanate.
