Abstract

A collagenous material occurring naturally in tubular form is treated so as to preserve the collagen fibrils in substantially their original relationships and to have at least 80% by weight collagenous solids and not more than 20% by weight of other protein. The material may be impermeable to air under 240 mm. Hg. pressure, may be prepared by digesting a mammalian blood vessel in a proteolytic enzyme, e.g. in a solution of ficin of concentration between 0.25 and 5.0% by weight, and of pH between 4.0 and 7.0, at 30 DEG to 45 DEG C. for 2 to 8 hours, and washing the material with water to remove the enzyme. The material may be treated with a hardening agent, e.g. 0.3 to 3.3% aqueous formaldehyde solution at 10 DEG to 35 DEG C. for 4 to 24 hours, glyoxal, chromic oxide or an anhydrous alcohol, and may then be sterilized, e.g. with an alkylene oxide, beta-propiolactone, aqueous formaldehyde, or by freeze-drying.ALSO:A tubular collagenous material suitable for implanting in a mammal is prepared by treating collagenous material occurring naturally in tubular form so as to preserve the collagen fibrils in substantially their original relationships and to have at least 80% by weight collagenous solids and not more than 20% by weight of other protein. The material, which may take the form of a branched tube and which may be impermeable to air under 240 mm. Hg. pressure, may be prepared by digesting a mammalian blood vessel in a proteolytic enzyme, e.g. in a solution of ficin of concentration between 0.25 and 5.0% by weight, and of pH between 4.0 and 7.0, at 30 DEG to 45 DEG C. for 2 to 8 hours, and washing the material with water to remove the enzyme. The material may be treated with a hardening agent, e.g. 0.3 to 3.3% aqueous formaldehyde solution at 10 DEG to 35 DEG C. for 4 to 24 hours, glyoxal, chromic oxide or an anhydrous alcohol, and may then be sterilized, e.g. with an alkylene oxide, aqueous formaldehyde, beta-propiolactone, or by freeze drying. The material may be stained.
