825,433. Twisting wires together; angular bending. SCHOCH A.G., E. Feb. 11, 1957 [Feb. 17, 1956], No. 4552/57. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for tying a plurality of elongated elements, such as crossed concrete reinforcing rods, by wire comprises a wire supply, means for feeding wire from said wire supply into a position adjacent a plurality of said elements to be tied, a hook for forming a loop extending around said elements, cutting means for severing said loop from said wire supply, a twisting member for engagement with the ends of said wire loop and for twisting said ends with each other, driving means for imparting rotation to said twisting member and a braking device for the wire adjacent the hook. To tie concrete reinforcing rods 72 with wire 44 at the point where they cross, a hand held wire feed and twisting tool is positioned with a twisting member 61 thereof positioned just above the rods 72 and a pivotable hook member 58 in a plane bisecting the angle between the two rods 72. A button 68 is then depressed to start an electric motor 100 which, through a flexible shaft 12, a shaft 4, worm 7, and worm wheel 8 rotates a cam-shaft 9. A cam 11 thereon rocks a lever 34, 36 about its pivot 32 to move a wire feed roll 38, rotated by a chain 42 from the shaft 9, into engagement with the wire 44 and a pressure roller 40. The wire 44 is thus fed from a reel 45 through a guide 47 until one end projects downwardly beyond the twisting member 61. The lever 34, 36 then swings back to stop the wire feed. A cam 10 on the shaft 9 then rocks a plate 31 about the pivot 32 to lower a link 55 and rock the hook 58 about its pivot 59 to bend the wire up around the rods 72. Downward movement of the link 55 also, by means of an abutment 54 thereon, rocks a lever 52 to cause a cutter blade 50 thereon to co-operate with a lower edge 49 of the guide 47 to sever the looped end section of the wire 44. The plate 31 also, through levers 26, 24 causes a clutch 13 to connect the driven shaft 4 with a shaft 14 on which the twisting member 61 is slidingly mounted. Curved members 78 extending from the twisting member 61 engage the wire loop and as the member 61 rotates it twists the ends of the wire together, being forced upwardly while so doing; such upward movement may be opposed by a spring. A pair of brake arms 80 extend from a fixed part 48 of the machine to embrace the member 61 and brake the movement of the ends of the wire loop during twisting. A stud 70 on the cam 10 then stops the motor 100. The apparatus may be operated by pneumatic cylinders, a manually-operated slide driving the feed roller 38 and having a stop thereon which actuates a valve to allow compressed-air to displace a piston which actuates the hook 58, cutter 50 and, by actuating a second valve, rotating the twister 61. In another, non-pneumatic, modification the slide may operate the hook 58, cutter 50 and bias a spring of a small spring motor which twists the wire. The cutter may be operated by the release of a spring at the clutching in of a rotating body. The motor 100 may operate continuously and be clutched in as required.
