Abstract
825,054. Gas turbine plant. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Feb. 1, 1956 [Feb. 1, 1955], No. 3220/56. Class 110 (3). [Also in Group XXIX] A fuel feed and power control system for a gas turbine engine having a speed governor mechanism controlling fuel flow along a first steady state operating characteristic according to the setting of governor speed selecting means, has a device supplying thrust augmenting fluid to the engine in accordance with a second steady state characteristic, means initiating operation of this device, and a device effective upon actuation of the initiating means for resetting the governor mechanism to maintain engine speed at the value fixed by the selecting means. The speed of a gas turbine engine is controlled by an engine driven centrifugal governor 160 actuating a hinged leak-off valve 152 and having its loading spring 146 adjusted through a threedimensional cam 142 rotated manually at 44 and moved axially as a function of compressor inlet pressure and temperature. The valve 152 controls a leak of fuel supplied via inlet 82, a regulating valve 180 and restriction 182 from beneath a piston 122 having a follow-up spring 158 connected to the valve 152 and actuating through floating lever 124 a piston valve 90 controlling the fuel flow at 140 to an outlet 102 leading to the burners. The valve 90 is also rotated to control the port 140 by a rack 104 moved in response to compressor discharge pressure. Under steady state operating conditions the ports are disposed substantially as shown. During acceleration, the piston 122 moves a fuel valve extension 118 into contact with a three-dimensional cam 114, further downward movement of the piston also moving the lever pivot 130 downwardly against a spring 200 so that valve 90 is under the control of acceleration cam 114 rotated as a function of speed and moved axially as a function of compressor inlet temperature. When the manual control is set for maximum speed, i.e. maximum loading of spring 146, a cam on the control lever opens a valve permitting a thrust augmenting fluid, e.g. water or alcohol, to be pumped into the inlet of the compressor or the burner and a switch is closed to open the solenoid valve 218 permitting the water under pressure to act on diaphragm 232 to close a drain valve 230 and open valve 234 allowing inlet fuel pressure via 236 and restriction 212 to act on piston 134 and shift pivot 130 up to a position limited by stop 242, thereby resetting the governor to maintain its speed.
