Abstract

The invention comprises a solvent which comprises a mixture of high-boiling aliphatic ethers, alcohols and esters, obtained by separating a fraction of boiling range 223 DEG to 363 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure from the products of hydrogenation of the oxo product of diisobutene and having as main components about 10% of nonyl alcohol, about 35% of dinonyl ether, about 15% of C18 alcohols and about 10% by weight of high-boiling esters. The solvent is used in the preparation of surface coatings (see Group IV (a)).ALSO:A solvent, obtained by separating a fraction boiling in the range 223-363 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure from the product obtained by hydrogenation of the oxo product of diisobutene, and having as main components about 10% by weight of nonyl alcohol, 35% dinonyl ether, 15% of C18 alcohols and 10% of high boiling esters, is used in a surface-coating containing drying oil modified alkyds. In the example an undercoat containing zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, barytes, china clay, aluminium stearate, long oil linseed oil alkyd and driers dissolved in the solvent of the invention is used with a top coat containing titanium dioxide, long oil linseed oil alkyd dissolved in white spirit or an aromatic high boiling solvent; panels so coated have a superior finish to those coated with a composition in which the solvent is replaced by white spirit or an aromatic high boiling solvent.
