Abstract

Hair is waved using a solution having a pH between 1 and 7 and containing a mercapto carboxylic acid ester having at least one hydrophilic group in the alcohol component. Esters specified are glycol monothioglycollate, 1 : 3 propylene glycol mono-thioglycollate, glycerine monothioglycollate and lactic acid thioglycollate. The solutions may include acids or salts as additives for adjusting the pH, gelatine, alcohols, wetting agents or polyvinyl alcohol, ammonium sulphite, thiosulphate, urea or thiourea.
