Abstract

824,316. Electrodeposition of metals of Groups IV A , V A and VI A , UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. May 29, 1956 [May 31, 1955], No. 16512/56. Class 41. Titanium, zirconium, hafnium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten are cathodically deposited in crystalline form from a fused alkali metal chloride-fluoride bath containing up to 80 parts by weight of an alkali metal chloride and at least 20 parts by weight of an alkali metal fluoride to which is added a halide of the metal deposited in such amount that the alkali metal fluoride is in excess of that required to form the double fluoride salt of the alkali metal and said metal to be deposited. Electrolysis is effected at a bath temperature of 750‹ to 800‹ C. with an applied voltage of 4 to 7 volts. Examples are given for the production of titanium, niobium and tantalum. The deposits are freed from electrolyte by leaching with hot water and arc-melted in an inert atmosphere to form ingots. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 678,807.
