Abstract

824,202. Fused-electrolyte cells. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. Jan. 14, 1958 [Jan. 16, 1957], No. 1713/57. Class 41. [Also in Group II] An electrode for use in contact with molten Al is composed of a sintered compacted mass of at least two compounds selected from the carbides and borides of Ti, Zr, Ta, Nb; that portion of the surface of the electrode intended to contact the molten A1 consisting essentially of at least one of the borides, and at least a part of the remainder of the electrode consisting essentially of at least one of the carbides. Fig. 3 shows an electrolytic reduction cell in which the electrodes 14 have their " boride " part in the molten A1 13 and their " carbide " part together with the junction 15 in the carbon wall 11. In Fig. 7 is shown a three-layer purification cell with the boride-carbide electrodes 14, 14a with their boride ends in respectively molten Al alloy 26 and purified A1 28, a flux layer 29 separating the metals. Specifications 784,695, 784,696, 802,471 and 802,905 are referred to.
