Abstract
824,023. Fishing rods. DUFF, G. J. March 14, 1957 [March 20, 1956], No. 8403/57. Class 48. Means for hooking fish comprises a pair of adjacent relatively movable line gripping members 22, 23 mounted on a spring- actuated carriage 15 retainable in pretensioned condition until released by means actuated by tensioning of the fishing line 6 upon a fish attacking the lure, whereby the carriage imparts a sharp pull to the fishing line. The carriage slides in a tubular part of the fishing rod with the line gripping members 22, 23 extending through a slot 11 in the rod. A helical tension spring 13 extends between a plug 12 in the rod and the carriage. One end of the carriage is formed as a detent 16 which engages with a complementary detent 17 provided on the inner end of a trip arm 8 pivoted on a pin 19 and extending through the rod slot 11. The fishing line 6 passes from the line gripping members 22, 23 through a runner 7 on the outer end of the trip arm 8 and then through fixed runners 5 on the rod, the runner 7 displacing the line from the rod when the detents 16, 17 are engaged. A jerk on the line caused by a fish therefore tilts the trip arm and releases the carriage. The line gripping members 22, 23 are slidably disposed in a vertical slot 21 in the carriage 15 and in the rod slot 11 and their lower ends are deformed to provide a space within which is disposed a U-shaped resilient member 24 for gripping the line. The upper ends of the members 22, 23 are loosely connected by two pins 25 and are reduced laterally to permit the lower ends to separate and release the line when the members 22, 23 are displaced downwardly (as shown). Automatic downward displacement of the members 22, 23, when the carriage 15 is retracted by the spring 13, is effected by the engagement of the rounded corners of the members 22, 23 with an inclined face 20a of a collar 20 secured to the rod at the rearward end of the slot 11 and having a gap coinciding with the slot 11. A combined safety catch and conversion member, Fig. 13, comprises a cylindrical sleeve 27 encircling the rod adjacent the trip arm 8 and having a groove 28a accommodating the outer ends of the trip arm pivot pin 19. The sleeve has a longitudinal slot 28 equal in width to the rod slot 11 and the ends of the slot are widened on opposite sides. In one position of the sleeve it overlies the portion of the trip arm 8 to rearward of the pivot 19 and thus prevents disengagement of the detents 16, 17; in another position it overlies the portion of the trip arm 8 in advance of the pivot 19 so that the arm is clamped against the rod. In a middle position it allows the trip arm to pivot freely.
