Abstract

970,920. Fishing bait. L. J. A. EMARD. Jan. 4, 1963 [Jan. 29, 1962; Nov. 29, 1962], No. 476/63. Heading A1A. A fishing bait comprises means for holding hooks 18 against the side of the bait and means for releasing the hooks from an end of the bait when a fish bites. The bait consists of longitudinal bars 2 inside a rubber or plastic casing 3 with one end of each bar being secured to a shank 4. The other ends of the bars 2 are free and abut a flange 14 on a sleeve 9 slidably fitted on the end of the shank 4. A rod 5 extends through the shank and projects beyond the rear end thereof to engage a loop 20 on an extension 19 of the trace. An extension 10 on the sleeve 9 has a nose piece 12 engaging a shoulder 6 on the rod to hold the latter against the action of a spring 7. When a fish takes the bait the bars 2 are deformed so that their free ends move longitudinally and carry the sleeve 9 rearwardly. The nose 12 then releases the rod 5 which moves forwardly to disengage the loop 20. A tensioned elastic connection 11 extending between the hooks and a guide 15 then draws the hooks along the side of the fish. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3) not shown the elongated bars are replaced by a single pivoted bar which when pushed inwardly by a fish disengages a spring-tongue attached to the rod from the end of the shank to release the rod. The bait includes a weight.
