Abstract

Coloured structures of vinyl polymers are produced by incorporating in the polymer before working up an azine dyestuff and then working up the polymer so coloured into a shaped article. Vinyl polymers specified are polyacrylonitrile, copolymers of acrylonitrile and mixtures of such polymers. The azine dyestuffs are those produced by heating aminoazobenzene, a nitrobenzene or a nitrosobenzene with an arylamine or hydrochloride thereof. In examples: (1) a dyestuff obtained by fusing together dinitrochlorobenzene, aniline and aniline hydrochloride in the presence of iron chloride is added to a dimethyl formamide solution of polyacrylonitrile from which a film is then produced; (2) polyacrylonitrile is dissolved in a dimethyl formamide solution of a dyestuff obtained by heating nitrophenol with aniline hydrochloride in the presence of iron, fibres being produced from the resulting solution.
