Abstract

In the manufacture of polymers, e.g. polymethylene terephthalates, the viscous liquid produced is lifted in thin layers above the pool of liquid, and these are broken by other similar layers to agitate the liquid and preferably also free it from solvents. A heated drum 1, Fig. 3, <PICT:0823100/III/1> has mounted therein two horizontal axes 4, 5 on which are mounted agitator members 8, 9 with projecting arms 6, 7, which intermesh when the axes are rotated preferably in the same direction. The drum is divided into compartments by baffle plates 17, 18, and is provided with an inlet 13, outlet 14, and vacuum line 15. The clearance between the intermeshing arms is about 5 mm., and between the arms and the vessel 15 mm. In operation, the arms lift a curtain of the viscous polymer, which is broken by the similar curtain lifted by the intermeshing arm, thus aiding final polymerization. The drum may be tilted to assist flow towards the exit, and the rotating arms may be raked to urge the material forward.ALSO:In the manufacture of linear polymers, e.g. polymethylene terephthalates, the viscous liquid produced in the final stages of polymerization, is lifted in thin layers above the pool of liquid, and the layers are traversed and broken by other layers to expose a large surface of liquid and free it from solvent. A heated drum 1, Fig. 2, has mounted therein two horizontal axes 4, 5 rotating in the same direction and provided with agitator members 8, 9, having arms 6, 7 which intermesh with a small clearance of about <PICT:0823100/IV (a)/1> 5 mm. The drum may be divided into compartments, and has an inlet 13, outlet 14, and vacuum line 15. In operation, bis-2-hydroxy ethyl terephthalate is heated under pressure, and when most of the glycol has been driven off it is passed into the drum 1, and fills up to about the level of the axes 4, 5. The rotating arm member lifts a curtain of the viscous polymer which is broken by a similar curtain formed by the intermeshing arm, aiding completion of polymerization and releasing solvent. The drum may be tilted to the exit to assist flow of liquid, and the rotating members 8, 9 may be caked forwardly.
