Abstract
<PICT:0762861/IV(a)/1> A continuous process for making fibre-forming polyesters comprises polycondensing a monomeric or partially condensed ester from an aliphatic or aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a glycol of formula OH(CH2)nOH (where n = 2-10) in separate successive zones while forcing inert gas at a rapid rate and in the form of fine bubbles through the melt in each zone. The glycol ester from reservoir 17 flows successively through three interconnected tubes 8, 9 and 10 each surrounded by a heating jacket. Inert gas is introduced into the tubes 8 and 9 by perforated nozzles 11 and 12 and into tube 10 by a stirrer 13 having a hollow shaft and perforated hollow arms, the inert gas loaded with glycol vapours leaving the reaction tubes at 14, 15 and 16. Beneath the stirring arm 13 is a quiescent degassing zone from which the bubbles ascend and the bubble-free polyester is transferred at 19 to a spinning apparatus. An example describes the making of polyethylene terephthalate in this apparatus. Specification 578,079, is referred to.ALSO:Polyesters are made by passing a glycol ester of a dicarboxylic acid from reservoir 17 successively through three interconnected tubes 8, 9 and 10 each surrounded by a heating jacket. Inert gas is introduced into tubes 8 and 9 by perforated nozzles 11 and 12 and into tube 10 by a stirrer 13 having a hollow shaft and perforated <PICT:0762861/III/1> hollow arms, the inert gas loaded with glycol vapours leaving the reaction tubes at 14, 15 and 16. Beneath the stirring arm 13 is a quiescent degassing zone from which the bubbles ascend and the bubble-free polyester is transferred at 19 to a spinning apparatus.
