Abstract

822,921. Feeding webs. CHAMPLAIN CO. Inc. May 22, 1956, No. 15863/56. Class 100(1) An apparatus for splicing a running web, with a replacement web comprises a pair of normally separated cutting rollers and a pair of normally separated splicing rollers, both pairs of rollers being disposed with their axes transverse of the web, and means to move the rollers of each pair together to effect web severance and application of adhesive material to the severed web ends. As shown, the apparatus comprises a roll stand R, cutting rollers C, and splicing rollers S. The roll stand supports an expiring roll 12 and a replacement roll 14, such that the replacement web 16 overlies the running or expiring web 18. The cutting rollers C comprise rollers 20 and 22 normally separated, the roller 22 being raised into operative position by pneumatically actuated pistons slidable in cylinders 24, 24<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 8. The splicing rollers C comprise rollers 26 and 28 carrying pressure sensitive tape extending longitudinally of the rollers. The rollers 26 and 28 are normally separated but may be brought into operative engagement by raising the roller 28 by pistons slidable in cylinders 30, 30<SP>1</SP>. The splicing and cutting rollers are driven in synchronism by a shaft 74 through an electro-magnetic clutch 76 and a manually actuated clutch 78; the clutch 76 also acts as a brake, upon de-energization, to arrest a shaft 114 carrying a helical gear 82. The gear 82 meshes with a gear 88 which drives gears 90 and 92 carried by the shafts of rollers 26 and 20 respectively, the rollers 28 and 22 being driven through gearing by the rollers 26 and 20 respectively. In operation, a replacement roll is loaded on the roll stand R by energization of a motor 172 which drives endless chains, not shown, and thus roll-supporting bearings 154, 156 and 158 along tracks 150. The expiring roll 12 and replacement roll are thus brought into the positions shown in Fig. 1. The leading end of the new web is threaded between feed rollers 66, 68, between rollers 20, 22, around the roller 20, and between waste feed rollers 54, 56 to a waste reservior 210. The clutch 78 is then manually engaged. When the rollers 54 and 56 are brought into engagement to accelerate the web 16 the roll 12 has almost expired. A "start" button 118 is then depressed to energize the clutch 76. A "splice" button 120 is then depressed, thus opening a solenoidoperated valve 110, Fig. 8, which supplies compressed air to the cylinders 24, 24<SP>1</SP> and 30, 30<SP>1</SP>, thereby moving rollers 22, 28, Fig. 1, upwardly. A knife or knives, not shown, on the cutting rollers 20, 22 cuts or cut the overlapped webs 16, 18 simultaneously. The trailing end of the expiring web 18 engages the leading end of the replacement web 16 during their travel, over a horizontal table, not shown, towards the rollers 26, 28. The cut waste from the trailing end of the web 18 is pulled downwardly by the roller 22 by means of small pins engaging the web or by adhesive on the roller 22, while the cut waste from the leading end of the web 16 is fed by the rollers 54, 56 into the reservoir 210. Adhesive tapes are then applied to either side of the cut ends of the webs to be spliced by the rollers 26, 28. The clutch 76 is then automatically de-energized by a cam, not shown, on the shaft of the roller 22 thus stopping rotation of the rollers 20, 22, 26, 28, while the rollers 22 and 28 are retracted by the pneumatically actuated pistons. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 793,936.
