Abstract

822,575. Continuous-casting machines; jointing; assembling force fits. WIELANDWERKE A.G. Sept. 12, 1956 [Sept. 12, 1955; April 20, 1956], No. 27942/56. Addition to 705, 856. Classes 83 (1) and 83 (4). A continuous-casting mould comprises a fluidcooled metal jacket and a graphite liner therein and preloaded in compression by said jacket, at least to an extent sufficient to maintain the liner in compression, at the casting temperature in the mould. An oversize, solid or hollow graphite-core may be forced into the jacket and machined to the correct internal-dimension, or the jacket shrunk upon the liner. The core, liner or jacket may be unitary or segmental structures. The mould may be reciprocated during casting by a motor 27 acting through cranked levers on a supporting framework 22. The invention is stated to be applicable to the casting of any metal or alloy, particularly steel, silver, nickel, aluminium, magnesium, and copper. Casting-processes.-When casting oxygen-free copper, a layer of carbonaceous particles, such as flake-graphite, lamp-black or pulverized anthracite, is maintained on the top of the melt in the mould, and the casting rate adjusted so that the maximum temperature of the liner, which can be measured by a pyrometer inserted in a hole drilled longitudinally of the liner, is kept below 1400‹ F. For oxygen-bearing coppers, this temperature should be below 1112‹ F.
