Abstract

822,521. Systems for charging batteries. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO. Ltd. March 14, 1958 [March 15, 1957], No. 8636/57. Class 38 (4). In a battery charging arrangement having a circuit for controlling the connection of a battery to a charging source a pilot device is included to ascertain the poling of the battery and to prevent the connection of a battery to the source when the poling is incorrect. The generator voltage is applied between terminal 3 and earth, energizing coils 5 and 10. The coil 10 is not able by itself to close the contact 8 but must be assisted by the coil 11 energized by the battery. If the battery is wrongly connected to the terminals the winding 11 opposes the winding 10 and the contact 8 will not close. If the battery is correctly connected the coils 10 and 11 are together able to close the contact 8 which energizes the coil 7, which, together with the coil 5, is sufficient to close the contact 2. A further contact 2a may be provided for the connection of another battery. An additional switch may be used to avoid the coil 11 being permanently connected to the battery, this may be the ignition switch if the circuit is used on a motor vehicle.
