Abstract

822,519. Refrigerators. HEAT PUMP & REFRIGERATION Ltd. March 13, 1958 [March 13, 1957], No. 8258/57. Class 29 A reversible compression heat pump having indoor and outdoor heat exchangers 2, 3 respectively, has a first connection between the ends of the heat exchangers remote from the compressor including a restrictor 20 and a shut-off valve 19 and a second connection by-passing the shut-off valve including a restrictor 22 and connected to the indoor heat exchanger 2 at a point intermediate the ends. The restrictors are preferably capillaries and resistance to flow through the second connection is greater than that through the first. The shut-off valve is operated with the reversing valve and when the indoor heat exchanger is used for cooling is open. When the indoor heat exchanger is used for heating the shut-off valve is closed and liquid refrigerant accumulates at the bottom of the heat exchanger below the connection with the by-pass line. Air circulates over the compressor casing and may be directed to waste or to the space to be heated by means of an adjustable vane in the heat pump housing (Fig. 2, not shown). A capillary may be included in the line 17 when the capillary 20 is dispensed with and the capillary 22 made smaller. According to the Provisional Specification the first connection may include a refrigerant sub-cooler.
