An artificial Persian lamb comprises a plurality of figuring yarns a secured to a previously separately produced material foundation n by warp threads knitted into wales b or b<SP>1</SP> through the foundation by needles which pierce it; and the figuring yarns, which may be chenilles or wicks of curled fibres, extend side by side on the fabric, each over a part of the width thereof, in lines which meander irregularly and in different ways as between adjacent yarns. In Fig. 2, the wales are not interconnected, whereas in Fig. 4 they are interconnected by shogging the warp threads between adjacent wales, as in normal warp knitting. As shown in the right-hand wale of Fig. 4, additional threads, each confined to the one wale, may be provided. The figuring yarns are laid by patterning warp bars and may be divided into groups each containing yarns 1-4. Each bar lays one yarn of each group so that, by imparting differing movements to the bars, the individual yarns within a group may be made to follow differing paths. Lengths such as i, i<SP>1</SP>, k of the yarns float between the points at which they are tied in. The warp threads may be of cotton, a superpolyamide, or similar synthetic material. The foundation may be woven, plaited, or knitted and may incorporate rubber or like threads; or it may be a flexible, elastically expansible foil, synthetic material, rubber or the like.
