Abstract
822,084. Centrifugal compressors. MASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. April 15, 1957 [May 22, 1956], No. 12297/57. Class 110 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] The impellers 3 of parallel centrifugal compressors 1, 2 each feed a conduit 12 via a non- return valve 6, venturi 7 and a valve 8 whilst the pressures p1, p2 across the venturi 7 are taken to an anti-surging control 4 and fed into pipes 13, 14, each incorporating a check valve 10; the control 4 is connected to a throttle valve 5 which varies the inlet section of the impeller ducts. The pipe 13 opens directly into a chamber 30 of a regulating device 16 whilst pipe 14 opens into the same chamber when a hinged closure 23 is unseated, which closure is joined by rods 21 to a pair of spring bellows 17, 18, the interior of the former being open to the conduit 12 by a pipe 15. The force exerted by a spring 24 loading the closure 23 may be adjusted manually or by a motor 29. The interior of bellows 18 is open to atmosphere. With the valves 10 open and the pressure px in pipe 15 below the preset value, i.e. that required to overcome the spring 24, the closure 23 remains seated; when the pressure px exceeds the preset value, the pressure in bellows 17 is greater than that in bellows 18 so that the closure 23 is unseated and interconnects pipes 13, 14 whereupon the pressure difference p1-p2 at the control 4 is lessened due to a baffle 9, and the throttle 5 is adjusted until the pressure px again reaches the required level and the system is in equilibrium. The compressors are thereby controlled to give a constant pressure with a variable capacity. In order to maintain a constant capacity with variable pressure a flow meter 31 is provided in the input to the compressors, the pressures on either side of which are fed to the bellows 17, 18 whilst the pipe 15 is disconnected from the bellows 17. In a modification, the chamber 30 opens to atmosphere instead of the pipe 13.
