Class 97(1) In the manufacture of a polarization filter by the treatment of a film of plastic material such as polyvinyl alcohol with an iodine containing solution subsequent stretching and heating, to extend the polarization effect into the infra red wavelength range of about 0.6Á.to 3Á and also 3.5Á to 7Á an acid, such as sulphuric acid, is added to the iodine-containing solution and that solution and the subsequent heating is adjusted to produce a filter having the desired effect. The heating may be in two stages, the first in which the film is kept at a moderate temperature (for example 50‹C.) for a fairly long time, such as 40 minutes, and the second in which the temperature of the film is raised to more than 100 ‹C. but not above 150‹C. for a short time (e.g. 2-4 minutes).
