Abstract
821,899. Tubes. LONZA ELECTRIC & CHEMICAL WORKS Ltd. June 26, 1957 [June 27, 1956], No. 20196/57. Class 99(2). A composite tube wall has a core 3, 3a of closed-cell cellular polyvinyl chloride or copolymer of vinyl chloride and cover members 2, 6 of hardened reinforced synthetic resin which adhere to the inner and outer faces respectively of the core member. The tube is made by winding a thin layer of glass fibres or glass fabric about a mandrel 1 formed of a steel pipe and impregnating the fibres with an unsaturated polyester resin which hardens forming the inner cover member 2. Sheets of polyvinyl chloride are heated and/or shaped to form the core 3, 3a with overlapping joints 4, the inner diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the member 2 to which it is bonded by an adhesive. Deformation may be carried out by treating the cellular polyvinyl chloride sheets with a volatile solvent such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone. The outer cover layer 6 is formed over the core by covering with a glass fibre layer which is impregnated with an unsaturated polyester resin which adheres to and covers the core. The polyvinyl chloride core may be free from or contain up to 20% plasticizer. The synthetic resins of the cover members 2, 6 may be of a liquid polyester mixture, e.g. based on maleic acid and a glycol to which is added a cross-linking component such as styrene ; alternatively, self-hardening resins based on isocyanates, urea or melamine may be used and, in addition, may also be used as adhesives. Further adhesives may be copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, cellulose nitrate or an epoxide resin with a hardener. Textile fabrics, foils of synthetic materials and metal braids may be used as alternative reinforcement for the cover members. The composite tube is sufficiently buoyant to float in water, may be used for floating pipe lines and has thermal and sound insulating properties. Further reinforced layers may be added to the outer cover member 6, and the mandrel tube 1 made of steel or rubber may be retained within the composite tube as a lining. An example is given of a tube made as described having inner and outer glass fibre members of 0À5-2 mm. thickness and a core made from flat sheets of polyvinyl chloride of 20 mm. thickness and 0À1 gram per cubic centimetre density.
