Abstract

821,688. Fuel cells. RUHRCHEMIE A.G., and STEINKOHLEN ELEKTRIZITAET A.G. Jan. 27, 1956 [Feb. 12, 1955], No. 2808/56. Class 53. In a fuel cell fed with combustible fuel, the fuel is intimately admixed with the liquid electrolyte and an oxygen electrode inert to the fuel-electrolyte mixture is used. Water-soluble fuels, e.g. ethyl or methyl alcohol, are dissolved directly in the electrolyte and water-insoluble fuels, e.g. diesel oil, are mixed with the aid of an emulsifying agent such as a neutral soap. The Figure shows a battery of cells comprising discshaped or cylindrical cathodes 1 and anodes 2 to which oxygen is fed. The cathodes 1 are formed of the double skeleton material of Specification 806,644 and the anodes 2 are of carbon treated according to Specification 797,944. The fuelelectrolyte solution of concentrated potassium hydroxide mixed with ethyl alcohol is passed through the battery, as shown by the arrows, at a rate dependent on the cell load. The discshaped electrodes may be arranged horizontally instead of vertically.
