A side-delivery rake and/or swath turner of the kind comprising a plurality of raking wheels pivoted by means of crank arms in echelon formation on a supporting member, the planes of the raking wheels being inclined to the direction of travel of the machine in such a manner that the wheels are rotated by the ground or crop as the machine is advanced along the ground, is characterized in that firstly the raking wheels are mounted on the rearward side of the supporting member, secondly the crank arms extend from their point of attachment to the supporting member in a direction which is forwardly divergent from the direction of travel of the device, and thirdly, the planes of the rake wheels are inclined to the vertical. In one embodiment, the frame members 40, Fig. 5, on which the rake wheels are mounted is attached to the rear of a tractor 20 through an hydraulic lift mechanism and carries bearings 45 in which crank arms 50 are journalled, the other end of the crank arms carrying rake wheels 60. The bearings 45 are slightly inclined to the horizontal so that the planes of the raking wheels are similarly inclined, preferably so that the lower edges of the rake wheels are in advance of the upper edges. Vertical displacement of the raking wheels is controlled by means of springs 67 attached at one end to a lever 65 on each crank member 50 and at the other to a chain 68, the links of which may be selectively engaged in a chain lock 66 mounted on the supporting member 40. In the modification illustrated in Fig. 10, the side delivery rake is adapted to be attached to the front of the tractor, the supporting member 115 of the rake being provided with a lateral portion 116 pivotally mounted in bearings 106 at the front of the tractor and capable of elevation by means of the hydraulic ram 161. Fig. 12 illustrates a further modification of the invention in which the raking wheel supporting means comprises two members 212 and 213 each having one portion adapted to support raking wheels and a second portion adapted to support a ground wheel 255, the forward member 212 being further provided with a tongue 217 having a draft connection 220 secured to its forward end. The two members 212 and 213 are rigidly interconnected at their elbow portions 229 and 241, so that the portions of the two members supporting the raking wheels are aligned in a direction oblique to the direction of travel of the device. This latter modification is the subject of Specification 821,502. Specification 802,201 also is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 753,478.
