Abstract
Liquid sulphur trioxide or oleum of at least 80% strength is stabilized by incorporating therein not more than 2, preferably 0.1-1, wt. % of an aromatic or pyridine compound. A large number of suitable compounds are listed, including aromatic hydrocarbons, amines, aldehydes, acids, and acid anhydrides, phenols, sulphonated, phosphonated, or halogenated benzenes, pyridines, and other nitrogen compounds. Benzene, diphenyl, or benzoic acid are preferred, but the examples also refer to chlorobenzene, tetraphenylhydrazine, and phenyl isocyanate. The small amount of sludge or oily liquid formed by the addition may be removed by filtration or decantation. In one example (4) diphenyl is added to liquid SO3, the SO3 is distilled off, and the solid residue is used to stabilize more liquid SO3. The use of diaryl nitrosamines (see Specification 820,458) is disclaimed.
