Abstract

A polyester resin for use as a plasticiser for aminoplasts is the reaction product of (1) a polyhydric alcohol having at least three hydroxyl groups, (2) a glycol, (3) an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in which the carboxyl groups are separated from each other by three carbon atoms, and (4) 2-ethylhexoic acid; the mol. ratio of glycol to aromatic dicarboxylic acid being 0.2-0.6, that of polyhydric alcohol to aromatic dicarboxylic acid being 0.4-1.0 and that of 2-ethylhexoic acid to aromatic dicarboxylic being 0.4-0.7. Specified polyhydric alcohols are glycerol, trimethylol propane, trimethylol ethane, pentaerythritol and dipentaerythritol; specified glycols are propylene glycol, 2 : p 2-dimethyl propanediol-1 : 3, 2 : 2-diethyl propanediol and 1 : 3-butanediol; and specified aromatic dicarboxylic acids are isophthalic and 5-tertiarybutyl isophthalic acids. Baking enamels are made by dissolving the polyester and an aminoplast (e.g. a melamine-or urea-formaldehyde resin), in a solvent (e.g. xylene) and, if desired, adding a pigment (e.g. titanium dioxide).
