Abstract

820,973. Moulding cycle mudguards by extrusion. BLUEMEL BROS. Ltd. Dec. 20, 1957 [Dec. 21,1956], No. 38941/56. Class 87(2). [Also in Groups XVIII and XXXI] A bicycle mudguard 10 is formed of metal or of plastic material extruded through a die of the cross sectional shape shown in Fig. 3. The die is preferably of curved configuration in a direction along its axis. A longitudinally extending bead 12 of substantially semi-circular configuration in cross-section and two slots 13 are formed during the extrusion process so as to provide a groove 11 of wide inverted T-shape. A combined reinforcing and decorative element of thin resilient metal strip 14 or of plastic is inserted in the groove 11. The strip 14 may be coloured or it may be made reflecting. Alternatively, the mudguard may be formed with a rib for retaining the reinforcing element in position. The rib may be of three-quarter circular configuration in cross-section so that it is of minimum width at its base and the reinforcing element would be formed of resilient strip metal of open tubular configuration, the edges of the open tube engaging with the neck of the rib adjacent its base so that the interior of the open tube embraces closely with the rib. More than one reinforcing element may be provided extending side by side longitudinally of the guard. Specifications 467,343 and 709,651 [Group XVIII] are referred to.
