Abstract

Isotactic polypropylene is stabilized against the influence of light and heat by incorporating therein a small amount of a para-phenylene diamine in which at least one amino hydrogen atom is replaced by a hydrocarbon radical such as alkyl, aryl, or cycloalkyl. The stabilizer may be incorporated in the polymer by spraying the polymer in powder form with a solution of the stabilizer and then melting the polymer. The stabilizer may be N,N1-di-sec.-butyl-, N-isopropyl - N1 - phenyl-, N - sec. - butyl - N1 - phenyl-, N,N1 - dicyclohexyl-, N - phenyl - N1 - isopropyl-, N,N1 - di - phenyl-, N,N1 - di - isopropyl-, N - methyl - N1 - isopropyl-, N - di - methyl - N1 - isopropyl-, N - dimethyl - N1 - sec. butyl-, N - methyl - N - isopropyl - N1 - phenyl-, N - dimethyl - N1 - phenyl-, or N - cyclohexyl-N1-phenyl-para phenylene diamine. The stabilized polypropylene may be spun into fibres or made into sheets or films.
